The following weekend we rented a little flat on Lake Sarnen. It was actually in a campground and was like a really up-scale mobile home.

One of our day trips was to Luzern (Lucerne). On the way into the city we stopped at Fort Furigen. This was one of the [many] Swiss fortifications constructed during WWII, this one built 1941-1942. The fortifications were literally built into the mountain and were very camouflaged. Some of them were staffed and running up into the 1990s. This one became a museum in 1991. When you enter they offer you official, wool Swiss army issue coats.
There are huge machine guns throughout the fort. You use spotting scopes and fire directly from the mountain.
The barracks. Poor guys. It slept like 64 and the fort would be staffed with >120 men. You'd rotate between sleep, duty and watch. Never even got your own bed.
